Decorator

A decorator is person whose job is to decorate the interior of buildings by painting the walls, hanging wallpaper, and arranging furnishings. They also help select decorative items such as colors, lighting, and materials.

An interior decorator will need to figure out exactly what the client needs, which may include organizing rooms, laying tile, picking carpeting, and finding furniture to complement it all. Sometimes that means he or she will have to recruit help from other home professionals to help create the perfect look.

Some decorators, known as artisan painters, specialize in creating murals and “Trompe l’oeil” by using special decorative techniques such as sponging, distressing, rag rolling, color blocking, and faux finishing. Artisan painting, unlike standard wall painting, can transform a plain wall into a sweeping Italian vista or an ancient stone wall.

Because there are several ways to apply paint, workers must be able to choose the proper tool for each job such as the correct roller, power sprayer, or hand brush. Choosing the right tool typically depends on the surface to be covered and the characteristics of the finish.

Decorators may or may not enroll in apprenticeship programs or have formal design training such as a bachelor’s degree in interior design. People in this field must have an eye for color and detail, a sense of balance and proportion, an appreciation for beauty, and a desire to create. They mix practical skills with artistic ability.
